Alternative energy will represent around 22% of total plant energy at
Philly's Lowville, NY Plant.

What PHILLY has accomplished

PHILLY has installed anaerobic digesters in our Lowville, NY plant to convert the waste stream from Cream Cheese production (whey) into methane gas, which replaces about 30% of natural gas usage and eliminates virtually 100% of whey land-spreading. Annual energy savings are approximately 87,000 mmBTUs, or enough energy to heat around 1,100 average sized households for 1 year.*

PHILLY's Lowville, NY Plant

*Per the Energy Information Administrations survey, it takes 80 mmBTUs/year to heat an average home
in the NE Regions for one year.

Lighting Project

In early 2008, the Lowville facility replaced its interior lights with energy efficient T-8 Lighting fixtures. This change will result in a reduction of 1,350,068 KWH per year. This is enough electricity to light 2,164 homes for a year.

Water Reduction

In 2008, the Lowville facility has decreased total water use by 9%. It is anticipated that when the digester reaches full capacity, along with a number of other initiatives being pursued, the decrease in water use is anticipated to exceed 25%.

Green Team

The Lowville Green Team, composed of employee volunteers, was formed in March 2008, and has implemented an aggressive recycling program. In 2008, the recycling project has resulted in a decrease of 33% in what is being sent to the landfill. The Green Team is also addressing employee education, other recycling and re-use opportunities, and energy and water-use reductions to further decrease our environmental footprint.
